OR - Horsetail Falls

The well-worn path up to Horsetail falls makes this hike perfect for newbies like myself.

All you need are some walking shoes that you don’t mind getting a little dirty!

It begins with a scenic 45 minute drive along highway 84 from Portland, Oregon east to Horsetail Falls trail #438. Alder trees, high cliffs and the Columbia river run alongside the highway that visitors travel on to reach this famed hiking area. The trail itself is actually only a few miles further than Multnomah Falls – the more popular tourist travel destination. I highly recommend visiting some of the other hiking destinations, after snagging the classic picture of the iconic lord-of-the-rings-esque bridge at Multnomah Falls. ( #basic - just kidding... but not really. )

This beautiful Oregon waterfall is a little less touristy than its older brother a few miles west (But only a little, especially during the months with nicer weather). You can go right up to the waterfall in a couple different locations if you don’t mind getting a little wet. The first location is at the base – no hiking required. The second location can be reached by taking the trail up about ¾ of a mile.

The trail leads uphill and snakes along the edge of the cliff side. It's set in just deep enough to take shelter from forest canopy, but sparse enough that you can see an aerial view of the Columbia river beyond in several places. While the waterfall is spectacular I think the glistening mossy cliffs are the real gem of this hike. They frame the ascent and really contribute to the “otherworldly” eerie atmosphere of the area. So, if you like creepy misty forests then don’t don’t forget to add traveling to Horsetail falls to your “things to do while visiting Portland” list!
