WA - Cape Flattery

Cape Flattery in Neah Bay, Washington is magical.

Traveling to Neah Bay, WA is no easy task though. It's a little over 150 miles from Seattle, Washington, or in my case over 300 miles from Portland, Oregon. Whew. Not to mention that even after over 6 hours of travel, I still wasn't guaranteed perfect or even mildly decent weather. Inclement weather is pretty much the standard here in the Pacific Northwest.

I've learned to embrace it. ...Sort of.

But in the end I did manage the trek out to Cape Flattery and was rewarded with a view that is hard to believe even exists. And bonus: I can now cross visiting the Northwestern most point of the contiguous United States off my bucket list after traveling to Cape Flattery!

Well, after traveling the 300 miles through Washington, guess what? It rained. Surprise, Surprise. But, like I said, you've just got to embrace these sort of inconveniences. Besides, a thick canopy of trees from the forest sheltered me as I made my way down to the coastline anyway.

The trail leading to the cape starts off like most trails in the Pacific Northwest do. It begins as a lightly graveled path, cleared of overgrowth and covered with pine needles. However about a quarter mile in, a narrow, elevated, wooden pathway laid itself at my feet.

Elven forest anyone?

I eagerly hopped on board and set off through the thicket that now surrounded me. It didn't take long before I reached this view:

It really isn't hard to see why Cape Flattery makes just about every "Things to do in Washington State" list. Picturesque doesn't even begin to describe the view. Moss and trees shroud mountainous islands that crumble out into the ocean. The water is a bright indigo that crashes into the the cliffs and eerie caves below.

If you have a day to spare up in Washington State I highly recommend checking this natural wonder out for yourself.
